You find the city totally uninhabited because of the Living Dead who are in search of annihilating all living beings that get in their way. You must fight against the horde of zombies that will attack you in a pack to make the attack impossible. Try to move as fast as possible and avoid being cornered by zombies because you will die instantly. Annihilate all the undead as fast as you can so you can save humanity. Do not lose sight of the green bar, it will tell you how much life you have left.
